questions for next week!

• Read Lev Manovich's chapter on Interface

• Comment on what you think are the key points

• How does this definition of interface differ from the Bolter/Gromala definition we talked about in class last week? Are there common ideas?

• Re-visit one of your interactive websites (or a new one you find) and re-consider using Manovich’s model

chapter on Interface
by Lev Manovich,
from The Language of New Media
2001 MIT Press, Cambridge Mass

"The interface shapes how the computer user conceives of the computer itself"

Eg “cut and paste” command
1. Makes traditional distinctions between spatial and temporal media irrelevant
2. Scale irrelevant
3. Traditional distinctions between media (text, image, moving image, sound, 3D models) all effected by cut and paste in the same way

We use the same interface for work and play

Manovich rewrites form-content dichotomy with content-interface.

What do you think???

chapter on Interface
by Lev Manovich,
from The Language of New Media
2001 MIT Press, Cambridge Mass

Manovich begins by telling a story of how Ridley Scott was commissioned to make an advertisement for Apple Mac. He relates the connection between these two powerfor metaphors: GUI of the macintosh and the dystopic vision of Blade Runner both offered powerful visions of the (digital) future.

As the internet progressively grew in popularity, the role of the computer shifted from being a particular technology to being a filter for all culture: a form through which all kinds of cultural production were mediated. (p64)

When you use the internet everything you access - texts, music, navigable spaces- passes through the interface of the Browser and then the interface of the operating system.

In cultural communication, a code is rarely simply a neutral transport mechanism; usually it affects the messages transmitted with its help.

A code provides its own model of the world

Messages carried through these codes are limited by the codes system

Eg: Whorf-Sapir hypothesis of mid 20th century proposed that human thinking is determined by the code of language…the speakers of different languages perceive and think about the world differently

homework week one (for MONDAY)

week one homework- interactive website analysis
considering the reading we looked at in today's class, from David Jay Bolter and Diane Gromala's book 'Windows and Mirrors', create an analysis on your blog of one of the sites we looked at.
Consider:
how is the experience choreographed? How does the interface 'shape our experience'?
How do Bolter& Gromala's definitions of windows/mirrors play out?
What is the design metaphor?
How would you storyboard this?
What are the elements that make up this design?

PLUS find and create an analysis for at least ONE more interactive site you find
